Christmas Community Dinner

There will be a free Christmas Community Dinner on Friday, Dec. 25 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Saint Mary's Catholic Church on Pleasant Street. No delivery services, but take-out is available. The meal will include roasted turkey with all the fixings, with homemade pie for dessert.

Juveniles nabbed in attempted snowboard theft

On the afternoon of Dec. 20, a Ludlow police officer arrested two male juveniles from Springfield who were in possession of stolen snowboards at Okemo Mountain Resort.

Town gets look at new budget

Town Manager Robert Forguites released his proposed 2010-11 town budget of $9.6 million Monday night, which if approved, would raise taxes 1.5 percent.

School athletic trainer's job in jeopardy

For the past 4 1/2 years, Matt Howland has taped ankles, iced knees and treated the injuries of the roughly 500 athletes at Springfield High School and Riverside Middle School. Now, his position is one that could be cut from next year's school budget.

Red Barn Sponsors Hanukkah Party

What must be Springfield's first ever public Hanukkah party takes place Sunday, Dec, 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Red Barn in North Springfield. Highlights include a Menora candle lighting ceremony, stories, songs, crafts, play dreidel, and ending with a vegetarian dinner.

Homeless shelter in Bellows Falls approved

Deb Luce, the executive director of the Springfield Family Center, which is one of three state-funded day shelters in the state, applauded the opening of the shelter. Springfield doesn't have a place for people to spend the night, she said.

A foot of new snow

Snowplows are out for the first time this season after a snowstorm dumped 12 inches of snow in Springfield. Sharing the honor with Chester, it was Vermont's largest recorded snowfall total from this storm. Most of it fell between 5 and 11 a.m.

Three injured in Weathersfield crash

Three Springfield residents were injured in a head-on collision Sunday morning. Shortly before noon, state police responded to a two-car collision on Weathersfield Center Road.

Shooting called accident

An 11-year-old Springfield boy was wounded last week when his 15-year-old friend accidentally shot him as the two were hunting squirrels, Springfield police said Monday.

300 Vermont Guardsmen depart for Afghanistan training

First snowfall of the season

Springfield experienced its first accumulating snowfall of the season today. Snowflakes began drifting down around 2 pm and by the time it stopped early evening, the town was coated with two and a half inches of the white stuff.

A barn fire, ignited on Linhale Drive in Springfield Friday afternoon, sent at least 30 firefighters from five different departments to battle it for at least three hours.
