Downtown Cosmos go long to beat Jacks

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield coach Pete Peck says ball movement is the secret to whatever success the Cosmos have and they had the ball flying all over the place in a 68-47 win over Windsor in a Marble Valley League game Saturday at Dressel Gym.
Springfield played at a tenacious pace for 48 minutes, found the open man on offense and led from start to finish.
"However far we go will depend on our ball movement," Peck said.
That ball movement resulted in six 3-pointers in the first half as the Cosmos took a 43-26 lead at orange-eating time and watched Windsor cut the lead to 10 twice before moving to 6-6 on the season.
Windsor lost for the eighth time in 11 games and coach Harry Ladue is pointing the finger at himself.
"I should have this team playing better," Ladue said. "We don't shoot, take care of the ball and get back on defense. All those things are my fault."
What Ladue didn't say was the Yellow Jackets are also young, with just one senior on the roster.
Springfield had the 3-point shot working in the first half as they connected six times from beyond the arc. The Cosmos were able to get clear looks and square themselves to the basket.
"We were able to do all that because of ball movement," Peck said.
Down 43-26 at the half, Windsor went on a 9-2 run behind back-to-back- buckets from Nate Furman to get the Windsor crowd excited at 45-35 with 4:03 to go in the third period. And the Jacks hung in there through the quarter as the lead was not out of sight at 53-41
With 5:36 to go in the last period it was 57-45, but the rest of the night belonged to the Cosmos, who closed out the game with an 11-2 run.
As impressive as Springfield was in the closing moments, the Cosmos opening act was also impressive as Ethan McAllister, with two 3s, and Brandon Boyle, with one, sent the Cosmos out to an 11-0 lead n the first 100 seconds. Springfield threw in four 3s in the period, Boyle connecting again, and the lead was 22-12 at the end of one.
Windsor continued to battle and trailed only 29-22 when Jacob Page hit a 3 with 3:30 to play in the second period. But the Jacks could not continue the momentum as the Cosmos surged once again to take a 43-26 advantage at the half.
"This is frustrating, "Ladue said. "I thought we were going to get better."
Peck has his eyes set on a home game in the first round of the playoffs and feels the way things are going now there's good chance.
"I really like the style of play we're showing now," he said. "We got a lot of guys into the game and a lot of them scored. This is the style of basketball we like to play."
Boyle said he liked the fast pace as well and said, "It's always good to beat Windsor."
Both teams could have shot better from the foul line where the Jacks were 9 of 21 and Springfield 9 of 18.
Boyle paced the Springfield scorers with 17 points while T. J. Wallace had 12 and McAllister 10. For Windsor, Page had 15 and Austin Soule 10.
On Tuesday, Springfield hosts Mill River and Windsor goes to Bellows Falls.
