SPRINGFIELD — Springfield, desperately in need of a victory, came oh so close Thursday night as they dropped a 35-34 game to Mill River in a Marble Valley League contest a Dressel Gym.
"We were absolutely lucky to leave here with a win tonight," said Mill River coach Ken Webb. "Springfield is much improved."
This was not expected to be as close as it turned out as the Minutemen have been cruising along with a 9-7 record and had previously beaten the 2-14 Cosmos, 52-29.
However, this was a scramble from the start as the Springfield jumped out to a 10-0 lead, withstood a Mill River comeback and led 25-24 going into the last period.
It still looked like the Cosmos might pull the upset as trailed just 33-32 with 1:05 to go. Mill River had the ball and went into their delay game and with 48.6 seconds to go Springfield had to foul and Rebecca Day made both shots to make it a 35-32 game. Springfield forced up two bad shots in its next two possessions and had to foul after each miss. Mill River had a chance to put a lock on the game, but Chelsea Bagley missed the front end of a one-and-one and Amanda Ley saw two more free throws rim out.
Then with five seconds to go Morgan Johnson scored from underneath for the Cosmos to make it 35-34, but the Minutemen ran out the clock.
"We played hard for 32 minutes," said Springfield coach Brodie Ladue. "But we could have made some more defensive stops and their zone bothered us."
When the Minutemen scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to take a 29-25 lead with 4:43 to go it appeared that Mill River was on its way. However, Taylor Thomas dropped in a 3 and after senior Mackenzie Mooney scored for the Minutemen, Thomas connected for a two-pointer to make it 33-32.
Kayla Perham played a big part in the Cosmos 10-0 lead as she cleared for two short jumpers and Desmond Dana had a basket off a drive and dropped in two free throws. Mill River didn't have a point on the board until the 1:47 mark of the opening frame when Mooney stole the ball a drove the length of the court.
Mill River sliced the lead to 11-5 at the end of the period and found some success underneath in the second period and took a 19-17 lead at the half.
Both teams had trouble taking care of the ball in the third quarter, but the Cosmos outscored the Minutemen 8-5 to take a 25-24 lead into the final eight minutes.
Mooney, who had 12 first-half points, finished with 14 on the night for Mill River. Makayla Stone added eight and Ray seven.
For Springfield Perham had 10 and Dana eight.
Springfield is off until Tuesday when it hosts Burr and Burton and Mill River takes on MSJ on Wednesday.
