However, the Cosmos were given a spark when No. 9 hitter Bennett Chevalier led off with a single to right. Cody Filkins went in to run for him and moved to second on a wild pitch. Brandon Boyle followed with a fly to center. It was at that point Springfield coach Larry Partridge took a gamble and gave up an out as Ethan McAllister bunted Filkins to third. • "(Alex) Drost was throwing some pitches in the dirt so I thought maybe one might get by the catcher," Partridge said as one of the reasons he decided on the bunt. While Drost did not throw any wild pitches, with Filkins at third it made it easier for him to score when Osborne hit a 1-2 pitch over shortstop to end the game. • It was a well-pitched contest from both sides as Drost, making his first start as he has battled the effects of mononucleosis since the beginning of the season, went the distance for Windsor, giving up six hits. • Jeremy Currie had his second straight solid performance for Springfield with a nine-strikeout, seven-hit effort. • In the Windsor seventh Currie began to tire and Partridge admitted that he let his left-handed pitcher talk him into staying in the game one batter too long. That one batter was Kibling. Before Kibling got his big two-run single, Windsor put runners on first and second with one out and Drost hit a wicked grounder back toward the middle that Currie knocked down with his bare hand and threw out Drost with the runners advancing. It was at this point that Currie talked Partridge into letting him throw to one more batter and Kibling singled in both runners to tie the game. Osborne came on to get the final out. • The first few innings were pitching dominated. Springfield did push a run across in the second on Currie's suicide squeeze, but Windsor tied it up in the top of the fourth as Jacob Paige walked, stole second and came the rest of the way on Corey Tillson's base knock. • The fifth inning was a bit painful for Windsor as Austin Soule, the Yellow Jackets first batter of the inning, hit a double to center and made a daring move to make it triple as he headed for third. The throw from the outfield sailed over third and Soule scrambled up and took off for home, but never made it as he was cut down at the plate. Then, before the inning was over, the Jacks had runners on second and third with two down when Currie got a strikeout to end the inning unscathed. • Springfield got the lead to 3-1 with an unearned run in the fourth and in the fifth Brandon Boyle singled, stole second, was bunted over to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Osborne. • "This was a tough loss to take," said Windsor coach Don Swinyer. "I liked the way we played today, but didn't like the final score." • There were several fine defensive plays, but none finer that the catch made by Springfield catcher Kirk Perham on a foul ball off the bat of Windsor's Brian Holloway that Perham caught sliding into the retaining fence. • Windsor, now 1-4, lost for the second time in the seventh inning. The Jacks will host Fair Haven on Friday. • The 3-2 Cosmos are home with Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. •
