Spartans earn a sweep with rally in 7th

At Castleton State College, Springfield's Ken Cook struck out 11 batters over seven innings in game one and the Spartans plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep of North Eastern Athletic Conference East opponent Lyndon State, 5-1 and 7-6 on Saturday.

The Hornets drop to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the NEAC East.  •  Cook dominated the Hornets on the hill, tossing a perfect game through three innings and striking out six batters during that span. Cook let up just two hits, one earned run and no walks, throwing 51 strikes on 73 pitches.  •  Matt Eisenhuth went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Ted Mills went 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI.  •  Down 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh of game two with one out, Ryan Zielinski singled up the middle to start Castleton's two-run rally. Zielinski followed with a steal of second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Robert Trucott.  •  Garrett Bissonnette, in a pinch-hitting role, walked and Zielinski scored on a passed ball to tie the score at 6-6. Billy Manley struck out the ensuing batter, but pinch runner DJ Detweiler stole second base. On the second pitch of an intentional walk situation to Eisenhuth, Detweiler swiped third base to put the winning run 90 feet away. After the intentional walk to Eisenhuth, pinch hitter Peter Wagner walked, loading the bases.  •  With a 1-0 count, Castleton's Kurt Hewes ripped a single through the left side for the walkoff win.  •  Tyler Erickson earned the win in relief pitching two-thirds of an inning. Castleton starter Billy Sisko served the no-decision throwing five innings, giving up nine hits, five runs and three walks and striking out seven.  •  Hornets' starter Jeremy Schichtle pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (three earned), two walks and five strikeouts. Jake Ainsworth suffered the loss in relief.  •
