Stingrays Winter Swim Season to Begin October 18, 2010
The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center’s youth swim team, the CRV Stingrays, will begin their third winter season on October 18. The team competes in the New Hampshire State Swim League and promotes lifetime physical fitness and wellness by teaching the skills and techniques of competitive swimming. The team celebrates both individual and team accomplishments in an environment that develops responsibility, respect, honesty, and caring. The youth swim team is open to children ages six through nineteen.
The team is coached by Charlestown, New Hampshire resident Patrick Whalen. Coach Whalen has coached all levels of swimmers including an Olympic champion, several all Americans, and many state champions. “Swimming is such a great activity for children. It teaches discipline, hard work, and how to achieve goals all in a fun and exciting environment.” explained Whalen.
The Stingrays practice at the EdgarMay Health and Recreation Center on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, with an optional practices on Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings. “Having a youth swim team is such an important part of our organization.” said Christian Craig, Executive Director of the Center, “Swimming is a lifelong activity and once a young person develops the skill, they can be active well into their senior years.”
The Stingrays swim team members are from a wide geographical area with swimmers from throughout the region - Brattleboro, Chester, Springfield, Weathersfield, Westminister, and Bellows Falls in Vermont, and Charlestown, Walpole, Claremont, in New Hampshire. Swim team parent and Springfield resident Beth Ann Drinker states, “This is still one of the best deals in town for a recreational activity. Swimmers have a longer season than most athletes, practice more days per week than most other sports, and need to purchase minimal equipment. The cost of the Stingrays swim team is less than $3 an hour averaged out over the season.”
