Lyndon takes care of Springfield, slated for tourney title rematch with Falcons
By: Sean Berry
12/29/2010 12:31 AM - An overpowering offensive and defensive attack powered Lyndon Institute over Springfield 59-30 Tuesday, setting up a championship rematch with North Country in the Vikings’ very own Holiday Tournament.
“That one should go down to the wire,” Lyndon head coach Bob Souliere said.
After watching North Country dismantle Woodstock, the Vikings did their best impression against the Cosmos. After a shaky first half by their standards in which Lyndon held a 27-14 lead, Souliere gave the team a halftime pep-talk.
“I was a little concerned with our first half. We weren’t playing to our potential and I thought we were a step slow. So we talked about it at the half and really picked up the intensity,” Souiliere said.
It didn’t take long to see his coaching take effect. The Vikings pummeled the Cosmos in the final two frames, outscoring them 32-16 and forcing 14 turnovers.
“Once that starts happening it really creates a flow in the game for us,” Souiliere said.
The Lyndon “big three” in this one were huge reasons why the game flowed so much in the Vikings’ favor. Riley Blankenship, Sarah Cornell and Racheal St. Hilaire all combined to score 25 of Lyndon’s 32 second half points.
Blankenship dominated major aspects of the game, leading with a game high 20 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Cornell added 12 points, while St. Hilaire tallied 14 points to go along with 13 boards for another double-double.
Desmond Dana scored nine to lead Springfield. Morgan Johnson came up with eight of her own.
Springfield, now 1-2 on the year, is set to face Woodstock in Wednesday’s consolation round of the tournament. The Vikings, still undefeated at 4-0, are prepped for their bout with North Country. The title game will tip-off immediately following the consolation final.
