Vermonters make mark

Kris Sabourin and Grant White were teammates on the 2009 Vermont team in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. They have wasted little time in making their mark as college quarterbacks. White is a freshman at Bowdoin, after prepping last year at Kimball Union Academy, and Sabourin a sophomore at Norwich University.
Sabourin and the Cadets are practicing this week in hopes of receiving a spot in an ECAC Bowl after completing the regular season at 8-2.
It’s been a different kind of practice week in Northfield. Norwich coach Shawn McIntyre has given the Cadets some extra days off, but they are also practicing on other days.
“We’ll be playing somebody. It’s hard when you don’t know who the opponent is,” McIntyre said.
White is on a team that plays its final regular-season game today at Colby with a chance to win the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Trophy outright.
Sabourin has been the main ingredient in the offense. He has rushed for 10 touchdowns and thrown for 13 more. He has run for 926 yards and leads the Cadets in scoring with 62 points and in total offense with 1,987 yards.
White completed 8 of his 10 passes last week, one going for a touchdown, in a 21-20 victory over Bates. He has been playing more late in the season for the 2-5 Polar Bears and has completed 30 of 51 passes for two touchdowns and has run for two other scores.
He also handles the punting and seven times has pinned the opponent inside the 20.
“He is a big, raw, athletic kid,” Bowdoin coach Dave Caputi said. “He has been thrust right into a role a little earlier than he anticipated.”
The Bears use the rugby punt where White has the option to run with it if he sees enough daylight. He picked up an important first down doing that this season.
“He’s got talent and he has a chance to be very good,” Caputi said. “He’s got very good arm strength and he can also make plays with his feet.
“I think we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg with him.”
White has a chance to hoist a trophy on Saturday just as he did in November of 2008 at St. Peter’s Field when he helped lead the Springfield High Cosmos to their first state championship in football in decades.
Sabourin, a BFA-St. Albans graduate, hopes for one more game this season.
“Kris has had a very, very good year for us,” McIntyre said. “Sometimes you forget he is only a sophomore.”
The NCAA selection show for the playoffs is Sunday and ECAC bids will be announced shortly after.
Other Vermonters looking to extend their season today are U-32 graduate Todd Murphy and Milton’s Tyler Robitaille. They are teammates at Maine Maritime Academy, which hosts Endicott in the New England Football Conference Championship Game at noon The winner gets a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Murphy, a senior running back, has had an outstanding season. He has 594 rushing yards, but does not get a lot of carries in MMA’s triple option where he does a lot of blocking. His statistic that jumps out at you is his 10.8 yards per carry. He has five touchdowns and has also run for a two-point conversion.
“He is very important in our offense. He does a great job of blocking, or anything else we ask of him, and his rushing average is outstanding,” Maine Maritime coach Chris McKenney said.
QUICK KICKS: Today marks the end of a career for one of the greatest ever to pull on a Middlebury uniform. Donald McKillop owns New England Division III passing records and most of the school and NESCAC passing marks. He and the Panthers finish the season at Tufts. ... Castleton State College quarterback Shane Brozowski was named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Mount Ida receiver Nick Lynch. Brozowski threw for 409 yards in a 50-41 loss to Norwich, marking the fifth time this season he has thrown for more than 400 yards. His season included 3,052 passing yards with 16 TD passes. .. Former Middlebury College kicker Steve Hauschka is now doing his kicking for Jim Fassel’s Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League. Hauschka kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime for the Locos, who have already clinched a spot in the UFL championship game to be played Nov. 27 in Omaha. ... Williams vs. Amherst, an event that goes by “The Biggest Little Game in America,” will be televised live on NESN at noon.
