Morris Named Potentate

Kristi Morris, a lifelong resident of Springfield, was installed as Potentate of Mt. Sinai Shriner's #3 in Montpelier on January 16. Mt. Sinai is one of two Shrine Centers located in Vermont and one of 191 throughout North America that support 22 hospitals providing care for children.

Vt. Guard Discrimination Case Reopened

The U.S. Department of Labor has reopened the cases of four Vermont National Guardsmen who allege they were discriminated against while working at Vermont's prison in Springfield.

School Board puts early retirement back on table

For the second time in two years, the Springfield School Board might offer early retirement incentives to senior teachers. On Monday night, the board discussed a proposal to offer a $55,000 stipend to teachers with at least 22 years of experience.

Pair caught with crack cocaine, Ecstasy

A Springfield man and a Cavendish woman were allegedly caught with crack cocaine and a large amount of Ecstasy in their glove compartment Tuesday after police stopped their vehicle Monday on Interstate 91.

$100K federal grant kicks off center's fundraising

Democratic U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy helped launch the Springfield Area Parent Child Center's capital campaign with a $100,000 federal grant. Leahy announced the grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture before a standing-room-only crowd Tuesday at the center.

Leahy replaces U.S. flag stolen from Vt. Guardsman

While their flag might have been stolen and burned, two Springfield residents one of whom is in the armed forces received a special replacement.

Traffic stop yields possession charges

A convicted cocaine trafficker from Springfield who was arrested in December on drug charges is facing new charges following a traffic stop early Monday morning in Vernon.

Letter: Approve transfer of North School

This March, the voters of Springfield will be asked to approve the transfer of the North School in North Springfield and its surrounding property to the newly formed North School Preservation Society, a nonprofit organization made up of local citizens who are dedicated to the preservation of the building and grounds for community use and recreation.

Paperwork help becomes priority

Springfield will contract with the Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission to do some administrative work on the $750,000 grant the town received toward the rehabilitation of the old Fellows Gear Shaper complex.

25 year old Stephanie Gibson hopes to be elected to the town Select Board in March. Gibson was born and raised in Springfield. She says she knows first hand the impact of the loss of the machine shops had on the community.

Opinion: Reservoir's value is huge

At the last Springfield Select Board meeting, two separate articles were voted to be put on the March ballot to sell the Weathersfield reservoir and the surrounding land.

Cosmos thump Wasps

Woodstock used a diamond-and-one defense on Springfield's high scoring Brandon Boyle and it worked. Boyle got only one field goal and seven points.
