Minutemen get out quickly, top Cosmos

SPRINGFIELD — Mill River got off to a quick start and never slowed down as the Minutemen marched to an easy 57-35 win over Springfield in a Marble Valley League boys basketball game at Riverside Gym Thursday night.
Springfield came into the game winning three of its last four, but never could get the offense untracked as the Mill River defense was tight and the transition game smooth.
Even Mill River coach Jason Smith was a bit surprised as the ease of the victory.
“You never expect to get many easy games in this league,” said Smith, who thought the defensive job that Alex Goyette did on Springfield’s Ethan McAllister was important.
McAllister was coming off a big 23-point game at Windsor and he drew special attention from Goyette, who held him to five points.
The loss dropped Springfield to 3-4 while Mill River moved to 4-2.
“We’ve been coming out flat all year and we came out flat again tonight,” Springfield Pete Peck said. “They just took us out of what we wanted to do. We just didn’t play a good game. We’ve got lots of things to work on.”
Springfield had just 12 points in the first half and could never get the offense in rhythm.
Leading 27-12 to start the third quarter, Mill River got a hot hand from sophomore Jay Carleton, who had a trio of 3-pointers. In all, Mill River had four 3s in the period and led 43-24 after three quarters.
Springfield, which has a history of having small teams, is small again with nobody over 6-foot-1, all of which made it difficult for the Cosmos to challenge Mill River’s ’s broad-shouldered, 6-foot-4 Nate Halligan, who had four put-back buckets.
“I thought we responded pretty well coming off a tough loss to Burr and Burton,” Smith said. ‘I think we played with some confidence and shared the ball.”
If there was a portion of the game that was pivotal it was the start of the second quarter. When the Cosmos got a McAllister basket to start the period, Springfield trailed just 10-8.
Halligan dropped a rebound back in and Carleton got the first of what would be four 3-pointers. Jordan Crowley answered for Springfield to keep it close at 15-10, but Mill River outscored Springfield 12-2 the rest of the period and was in front by 19 heading into the final period.
Carleton ended up with 16 points to pace Mill River, which got 12 points from Halligan, nine from Elliott Stewart and eight from Devin Sadakierski.
Kirk Perham paced Springfield with 16 points. Nobody else had more than five.
Both teams go on the road Tuesday as Springfield heads to Hartford and Mill River travels to Otter Valley.
