Video: Flooding concerns in Springfield

News Channel 5's Randy Gyllenhaal is on the scene in Springfield, Vermont, where flooding is a major concern.

Springfield weather updates

Rains seemed to come to an abrupt end once the eye of the storm passed by and to the north of us, around 6:30 pm. The rains were replaced by gusty winds which within an hour brought on power outages to many area residents. Winds finally began to calm down as midnight approached.

Irene is here, flood, gales to follow

Irene is behaving just as predicted, and drenching rain is spreading northward through Vermont. Already, early this morning Springfield got an inch of rain in two hours.

A Bridge to the Future

It's difficult to miss the symbolism. A decrepit bridge to a vacant factory, a metaphorical link to the town's long faded industrial boom, is removed.

Red Cross opens hurricane shelter in Springfield

With Hurricane Irene heading north and anticipated to make landfall in New England overnight, the Vermont & New Hampshire Valley American Red Cross announced that they will open 8 shelters including one in Springfield.

A stronger crane will be used today to remove the old steel bridge which proved too heavy for the crane that was tried last week.

Springfield celebrates 250th anniversary

The town of Springfield could not have asked for a better day to celebrate its 250th anniversary. The weather was warm, the sky was clear, and hundreds of people came out to Riverside Park on Saturday for a day-long party of music, food, crafts, games, historic displays and more.

Church dedicates new cross

One hundred years ago, the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Springfield held a special ceremony when they installed a cross on top of their steeple as a celebration of their faith. Saturday, the time had come to remove their historic landmark and replace it with a new one.

On August 20, 1761, the town charter was awarded to a bunch of elites 75 miles south who in the following year tried to run out of town those who had previously settled here!

Fellows bridge ain't a-budgin'

The estimated weight of the bridge was 40,000 pounds but it turns out the bridge weighs much more than that. As of Thursday afternoon, contractors had still not removed the steel bridge from the abutments.
