Springfield, Vt. - For more than 20 years, the creator of the cartoon hit the Simpsons, Matt Groening, chose not to reveal the real town the Simpsons is based on until now.
Groening says the town of Springfield in the show is based on Springfield, Oregon. But, that has some fans in Springfield, Vermont, the self-proclaimed home of the Simpsons, very upset.
"I think it's crazy. It's crazy. It's sad," resident Paul Kendall said.
Kendall was involved in a film created for Springfield, Vt. It beat out films from 13 other Springfields across the country in a competition to host the premiere of the Simpsons Movie in 2007.
"I think over 3 thousand people came to town for the premiere," Kendall said.
Five years later, the Chamber of Commerce in Springfield, Vt. Is still stacked with Simpsons paraphernalia, including a giant yellow hand signed by Groening.
Member of the Chamber, Carol Cole says, she does not expect Groening's admission to change much around town.
"The Simpsons families in Springfield are still going to embrace Springfield, Vermont as the home of the Simpsons," Cole said.
