Aaron Fitzgerald, 22, gave up after a foot pursuit into a wooded area in Springfield. The chase began when he bolted out the back door of his girlfriend’s residence on Westview Terrace, according to Springfield Police Officer Larry Muldoon. Fitzgerald pleaded innocent Tuesday in White River Junction criminal court to a felony charge of aggravated domestic assault and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. He was returned to jail as an escapee because the state Department of Corrections alleged that he failed to show up for a work crew sentence stemming from a vandalism conviction. Police were called to Westview Terrace shortly after 10 a.m. Monday after a friend reported that Fitzgerald had pushed his girlfriend’s head into a wall and then placed her in a choke hold while threatening to kill her. Muldoon said Fitzgerald was already gone when police arrived, but a sergeant reached Fitzgerald on his cellphone and told him to come out of the woods. Fitzgerald allegedly refused, telling police they “would never catch him.” Police remained in the area and swooped in when a neighbor reported that Fitzgerald returned to the apartment. Muldoon’s affidavit said Fitzgerald bolted back to the woods, was chased down and was threatened with a Taser.
