Local Household Hazardous Waste Collections Coming To Springfield Submitted by VT Journal on Tue, 09/10/2013 - 3:48pm By MARILYN LEDOUX The Vermont Journal/The Shopper SPRINGFIELD, VT - The Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District is sponsoring free events for the collection and safe disposal of household hazardous wastes on Saturday, September 14. Residents and small businesses from Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Plymouth, Reading, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, West Windsor, and Windsor may participate. No pre-registration for residents. Businesses must pre-register and will be charged for disposal costs. The collections will be held at the Springfield Transfer Station from 9 a.m. until noon and at the Weathersfield Transfer Station from 9 a.m. until noon. Bring in a mercury thermometer and receive a new digital thermometer. For more information, call 802-674-9235 or click on www.vtsolidwastedistrict.org for a list of what to bring. What to bring? Products with labels that say: CAUSTIC, CAUTION, CORROSIVE, POISON, FLAMMABLE, WARNING, DANGER, TOXIC** From the Garden/Yard/House: insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, rodent killer, metal polish, pool chemicals, photography chemicals, flea control products, no-pest strips, drain and toilet cleaners, oven cleaner, mothballs, lighter fluid, bathroom cleaners, rug and upholstery cleaners, spot removers, bleaches, dry cleaning fluids, chemistry sets, arts and crafts supplies, mercury thermometers and mercury thermostats. From the Garage/Workbench: antifreeze, brake fluid, car wax and polishes, gasoline, transmission fluid, engine and radiator flusher, engine degreaser, carburetor cleaner, gas treatments, plastic fuel filters, rust proofers, wood preservatives, sealants, solvents, liquid creosote, cesspool cleaners, roofing tar, driveway sealer, adhesives, muriatic acid, varnish, paint thinner, wood strippers and stains, lead- and oil-based paints. (Properly drained metal fuel filters can be recycled with scrap metal at your transfer station.) DO NOT bring latex paint, used motor oil, batteries, asbestos, radioactive material, empty containers, fireworks, tires, medical waste, dry creosote, or ammunition. Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs go to your transfer station or local, participating hardware store. Please note: Keep products in their original containers. Do not mix products. Never smoke near hazardous materials. Do not leave your vehicle when you arrive on site; you will be assisted by trained staff. The District has the right to refuse any material based upon its nature. Southern Windsor/Windham Counties Solid Waste Management District is a union municipal district dedicated to providing solid waste management authority, services, and planning to its member towns. The District was chartered in 1982 and currently serves thirteen Vermont towns. This event is partially funded by a grant from the State of Vermont.
