Published September 19, 2013 in the Rutland Herald Jacks jolt Cosmos with OT triumph By POODY WALSH Correspondent WINDSOR It did not look good for a long time for Windsor. For nearly 52 minutes Springfield controlled the flow of the game, but during that span left numerous opportunities at the doorstep of the Windsor goal. It would later cost them as Windsor scored on a penalty stroke with 7:34 to play in regulation to tie the game then won the fray, 2-1, just over a minute into the overtime. It was the second overtime win this week for the Yellow Jackets, having nipped Woodstock 3-2 on Monday. The loss left Springfield coach Bindy Hathorn with mixed emotions, as her team played well, but the scoreboard was not her friend. “We just played so well for so long, but we should have scored more,” said Hathorn. “It’s a difficult loss when you feel you dominated.” Both Hathorn and Windsor co-head coach Sandy Clary agreed that the game took on a new look when Windsor was awarded a penalty stroke. One of the officials said the penalty stroke was called because the “goalie covered up the ball.” Hathorn had no trouble with the assessment. “That was a good call,” she said. Haley Wood took the shot for Windsor and hit a low crisp shot to the right of Springfield goalie Erin Chlebak who could do nothing about it. The goal had a deflating effect on Springfield and uplifting for Windsor. “That goal turned things around,” said Windsor co-coach Jody Wood. Chlebak kept Windsor from winning the game in regulation when she came out a long way with seven minutes to go and stopped Wood who was ahead of the field. The 10-minute,seven-on-seven overtime last just over a minute in as Windsor put the game away when Wood, wide left of Chlebak, moved the ball into the middle where Ashley Wilcox one-timed it to Kristen Nott, stationed to the right of Chlebak, who scurried to cover the short side, but was a tad late as Nott knocked it in. Game over. The win evened Windsor’s record at 2-2 while Springfield, after opening the season with a win over Burr and Burton, has lost four straight. One of the reasons that Springfield had such a territorial edge for so long was the midfield play of freshman Amelia Battista who was a momentum killer, stopping Windsor drives before they could get started. And it was Springfield that tallied first with just nearly eight minutes gone as hard-hitting Kaylee Haskell, positioned just inside the circle, pushed the ball towards Windsor keeper Emma Saucier. However, the ball was deflected en route and ended up on the stick of Cosmo Maygan Daly who slapped it in. The Windsor chances were few in the first half as the Jacks had trouble penetrating the Springfield defense. The Jacks did have four penalty corners, but could do nothing with them. As the game moved deep into the second half Windsor showed some spark as Wood had a couple of crosses that went flying in front of Chlebak. Eventually Wood ushered a rolled toward Chlebak that stopped the shot putting her pads together and squeezing the ball between them. For that she was called for covering up the ball and the resulting penalty stroke. Both teams play again Friday, Windsor at Burr and Burton and Springfield at Hartford.
Let's just imagine that this article was about a field hockey game, since the "reporter" was to incompetent to state that basic fact in the article.
