Published October 20, 2013 in the Rutland Herald Springfield Hospital has a new president By SUSAN SMALLHEER Staff Writer SPRINGFIELD — A health care executive from North Carolina has been hired as the new head of Springfield Hospital and its affiliates. The Springfield Medical Care Systems board of directors has selected Timothy R. Ford to serve as their president and chief executive officer. He will start work Nov. 4. Ford replaces Glenn Cordner, who took a medical leave earlier this year. Cordner had headed up Springfield Hospital twice, from 1996-2006, and returning in 2009 until this year. Cordner has worked for the hospital in a variety of positions for a total of 26 years. “I am pleased Tim is joining us to continue the great work SMCS has accomplished,” said Steve Birge, chairman of the SMCS board. “Tim’s combined experience, leadership skills, and broad understanding of the healthcare industry stood out among several excellent candidates.” Ford most recently was chief executive officer of Blowing Rock (N.C.) Hospital, and senior vice president of corporate services for Appalachian Regional Healthcare System in Boone, N.C., which includes Appalachian Regional Medical Associates, Blowing Rock Hospital, Watauga Medical Center and Cannon Memorial Hospital. Prior to his position at Blowing Rock, he was senior vice president of operations at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, N.C., and was a healthcare analyst for the state of North Carolina, according to a release from Springfield Medical Care Systems. Ford couldn’t be reached for an interview, but said in a statement: “I am looking forward to joing the SMCS team. The unique organizational structure, its progressive approach to health services, and its strong track record for quality of care and improved health outcomes offers a great opportunity to shape the future of healthcare.” Ford has a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Andy Majka, Springfield Hospital’s chief financial officer, has been acting chief executive officer at Springfield Medical Care Systems in Cordner’s absence. The board had hired Phillips DiPisa, an executive recruiter, to handle finding Cordner’s replacement.
