Published January 5, 2014 in the Rutland Herald Mills heats up, Terriers topple Springfield By POODY WALSH Correspondent WESTMINSTER — A 3-2 zone was effective early and the offense caught fire late enabling Bellows Falls to come away with a 49-37 win over Springfield in a Division II Marble Valley League game Saturday at Holland Gym. The Terriers have had a rough start to the season with only a win over Division IV Black River in its first three games. In the two losses Bellows Falls tried to rely on a man-to-man defense and it cost them. On Saturday the Terriers played a 3-2 zone and it cost Springfield. “I knew we might be a little rusty offensively because we had our last two practices snowed out, but when we have been able to practice we’ve been working on our defense and it showed today,” said Bellows Falls coach Evan Chadwick. The game was tied 29-29 with 4:26 to go in the fourth quarter when Kendrick Mills scored nine points down the stretch as the Terriers made their free throws and pulled away. “Mills has been a good player for them for a long time and he made his free throws (11-15 on the night) when they counted,” said Springfield coach Pete Peck. Springfield came into the game with two straight wins after losing its first three games. “I think they took advantage of our mistakes,” said Peck. The Cosmos were patient on offense, constantly moving the ball around working for the good shot, particularly in the first half which ended 16-13 in favor of Bellows Falls. The pace picked up in the third quarter, but the Cosmos had both Josh Rivers and Chris Ficklin spending time on the bench with foul trouble. Even with those two players out of the lineup Springfield was able to take a lead after three quarters, 27-24, as Justin Gomez scored five unanswered points to close out the quarter for the Cosmos. Two freethrows by Zach Brooks and one from Mills tied the game at 27-27. It would be tied once more before Bellows Falls took the lead on a Mills jumper and the Terriers never trailed the rest of the period. “I think our defense wore them down,” Chadwick said. Like in the loss to Windsor, the Bellows Falls players were charged with several traveling calls that resulted from their offensive moves that result in the players finishing a drive with a leap, landing on two feet. Like Windsor coach Harry Ladue, Peck was looking for additional traveling calls that never came. Mills ended with 19 points for the Terriers while Jeremiah Dunbar added eight. Devin Brady had 14 and Josh Rivers eight for Springfield. Both teams are home Tuesday with Green Mountain coming to Bellows Falls and Windsor coming to Springfield.
