Evan J. Cox, 28, of Springfield, Vt., was arraigned Friday on 17 charges in Central Berkshire District Court in Massachusetts. The alleged offenses include drug conspiracy charges, charges that he illegally owned firearms and used firearms while committing a felony and drug possession charges including phencyclidine, or PCP, which the federal Drug Enforcement Administration describes as causing “mind-altering, hallucinogenic effects.” Cox is being held at the Berkshire County House of Corrections on $500.000 bail. A press release from the U.S. Marshals Service said the Vermont Violent Offender Task Force was searching for Cox because he was wanted on counts of first-degree aggravated domestic assault, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. Cox was arrested in the early morning hours Thursday in Pittsfield after being located by a team of law enforcement officers which included deputy U.S. marshals, troopers with the Vermont and Massachusetts State Police, members of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force and officers with the Pittsfield Police Department. According to the marshals, Cox’s whereabouts have been unknown since he went on the run in February 2011 until a lengthy investigation, conducted by the Vermont Violent Offender Task Force, led authorities to Pittsfield. Police noted when Cox was found on Columbus Avenue in Pittsfield on Thursday there were handguns and illegal drugs in the home. The Pittsfield Police Department posted a description of the incident on its Facebook page. A thorough search conducted at the home found three loaded handguns, two bulletproof vests, one vest with ceramic protection plates, a Kevlar helmet, a stun gun, several grams of crack cocaine spread throughout four bags, a large amount of marijuana, a large amount of liquid PCP kept in jars, digital scales, packaging material and about $30,000 in cash. Police also arrested Radell C. Johnson, 28, of New Haven, Conn., at the scene. Johnson was arraigned Thursday based on the items found in the Columbus Avenue home. Cox was also arraigned based on the items and as a fugitive from justice. The U.S. Marshals Service said the arrest was made possible by the efforts and cooperation of the team that acted Thursday, as well as marshals in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts and officers with Homeland Security Investigations. When Cox was arrested police say they found three loaded hand guns, two bullet proof vests, one vest with ceramic protection plates, a Kevlar helmet, a stun gun, several grams of crack cocaine, a large amount of marijuana, a large amount of PCP, digital scales, packaging material, and approximately $30,000 in U.S. currency. Authorities also arrested Radell Johnson, 28, of West Haven, Conn., on various state criminal charges. Cox was arraigned on Massachusetts State charges stemming from the items recovered and also as a Fugitive from Justice. Johnson was arraigned on Massachusetts State charges stemming from the items recovered. Cox had been on the run since February 2011.
