Reported gang member denies drug charge

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — An alleged member of the Jersey Boys drug gang was returned from New Jersey to face a charge in Vermont.
Daniel “Chubbz” Ramos, 22, of Newark, N.J., pleaded innocent to a felony count of selling crack cocaine Thursday in White River Junction criminal court before being jailed on $25,000 bail.
He is accused of selling drugs last June to a police informant in Springfield. He faces up to five years in prison on that charge.
Ramos had been in jail in New Jersey, where he faces several weapons-related charges.
“I should point out that he waived extradition as soon as he found out about the warrant ... and came to Vermont of his own accord,” defense attorney Michael Shane told the court as he contested the state’s request for $100,000 bail.
“It seems that he’s faced stiffer penalties in the past and shown up to court promptly when asked to,” Shane said. “For those reasons we feel that the amount of bail requested is extremely excessive.”
Assistant Attorney General Paul Barkus countered that Ramos is a piece of a larger puzzle.
“Mr. Ramos and other individuals from New Jersey have been engaging in continuous drug dealing in the state of Vermont,” Barkus told Judge Karen Carroll.
“In June of last year he was indicted on numerous offenses, all involving firearms, in the state of New Jersey,” the prosecutor said. “He has a history of (juvenile) adjudications for robbery, burglary, and weapons charges.”
Carroll reduced bail to $25,000, saying: “The defendant has used false names and dates of birth before in New Jersey, which is of concern to the court. The court cannot be assured that he is likely to appear here even though there don’t appear to be any failures to appear on his record.”
Does this mean we are stuck with his imprisonment expenses while he is awaitng trial? Can we ship him back to New Jersey?
ReplyDeletethe judge reduced bail while stating there's no assurance this guy will show up for trail? well, the judge is an idiot bleeding heart andshould stand trial if the guy jumps
ReplyDeleteShame on you for attacking a judge. Most of the judges today don't have a clue as to how many kids these drugs have killed as surely as if shot in the head. We need to put judges in place only if they have lost a family member to drugs. I suspect there would be some changes around here.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anonymous 3/21 6:09 PM; the Judge's statement (and her thinking) are illogical. If she thinks his future attendance in court is questionable, why would she grant bail less than what the prosecution has requested?
