Published May 30, 2014 in the Rutland Herald Rebs top Cosmos to end skid STAFF REPORTS SPRINGFIELD — When Leland & Gray played well and lost at Twin Valley earlier this week, Rebel coach Eric Durocher thought that might have been a sign that that good times might be starting to roll in his team’s favor. He may have been right as the Rebels played a good game again Thursday against Springfield, an 11-3 win, snapping a four-game losing streak. “And it’s the right time of the year to be playing well,” said Durocher whose team has just Saturday’s home game with the same Cosmos to close out the regular season. The Rebels are 6-8 and entered the day in 10th place with Durocher hoping a Saturday win could enable the Rebels to get a home game in the first round of the Division III tourney. “We’ll just have to wait and see,” said Durocher. Springfield, now 4-10, will definitely play on the road in the Division II tourney, but the Cosmos have other things on their mind as they are currently in a four-game in four days schedule. The Cosmos, who played Woodstock Wednesday, will be at West Rutland Friday. To add to the Cosmos woes, Brighton Fontaine, one of the team’s pitchers and a top hitter, has a hamstring ailment. “I hope he can play some this weekend,” said his coach Archie Farmer. Josh Donna, the ace of the Rebels pitching staff, picked up the win, but he had to work for it. He only gave up only three hits, but he walked seven. Donna had to be taken from the mound with one out in the sixth when his pitch count got up to 120. Corey Nystrom and Own Beattie finished up. Springfield used three pitchers. Ed Shambo got the start, and like Donna he had trouble throwing strikes as he walked six. He also gave up seven hits. He was lifted in the fifth inning with Jon Hildreth finishing up. Leland & Gray scored in each of the first six innings - getting two in each of the first three innings, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Nick Bills drove in both runs in the first with a two-run single while Jeremy Borat had a two-run base hit in the fifth. Borat, Bills and Nick Morrow each had two hits for the Rebels. Kyle white had a two-run double for the Cosmos in the fifth.
