Springfield Family Center seeks support for playground May 30, 2014 Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on email Share on print More Sharing Services 0 By Stephanie Thompson, Executive Director In the center of the Westview community is a grassy park area, featuring a playground. Over the years the playground has become rundown, outdated and unsafe. Not only do playgrounds foster growing and sharing, but also encourage physical activity. Many children do not receive the necessary amount of physical activity, and this is certainly no different for lower income children. We see many children spending their summers shut inside, curtains drawn, glued to their televisions and gaming systems. In addition to serving the residents of the immediate Westview community, it serves families that live on nearby streets and many other community children as they visit friends or family in Westview. The Springfield Family Center is a point place for those in the community seeking services. We work closely with our families and when a concerned parent contacted us regarding the disrepair of their community playground, we decided to undertake the effort, though it has been some time in the making. Ben & Jerry’s has generously donated $1,000 to the project, however it will take more to make this a truly great playground. We are seeking donations from businesses and community members, either in-kind products that can be used for the build. We hope to secure enough funding in the coming months to begin work mid-summer, which will include demolition of the existing structure, removing concrete bases, and prepping for the new structure. Anyone with expertise in these areas willing to provide assistance, please call Stephanie at (802) 885-3646 ext. 210.
