SPRINGFIELD — Join in for the first Freedom Park Neighborhood Meet & Greet on Sunday, June 8, from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be live music and the chance to meet area neighbors. Please bring a potluck dish, your own drinks, plates, utensils and if you have them available, a shade tent, lawn chairs/blankets, folding tables/chairs. Freedom Park can be found by turning up South Street from Clinton Street and taking a left on Olive Street and turning right on Furnace Street. It can also be accessed by turning up Loveland from Clinton Street, turn left on Olive Street and turn right on Furnace Street.
This is a non-alcoholic event. Dogs are allowed on leash, but please pick up any droppings and discard appropriately.
Freedom Park is a very large public park in the middle of a neighborhood on the east side of Springfield, Vermont. The Freedom Park neighborhood boundaries are Clinton Street, South Street and then down Merrill Street. A wooded area borders the east side of the neighborhood. The South School sat on this property but closed in the late 60s, early 70s. The brick school is long gone but Freedom Park stands in its place.
The Freedom Park Neighborhood Group is working toward returning Freedom Park to the park many Springfielders remember when ice skating and sledding and hot chocolate in the “Hut” were staples in the winter. The “Hut” is a log cabin that houses two restrooms and a large meeting room with a wood- burning stove and was built in 1976. In 2005 a new play structure was raised and a volleyball court was created. The first project of the Freedom Park Neighborhood Group will be to return the volleyball court to shipshape condition readying it for summer volleyball leagues.
