Dump Daze Growing by the Week

SPRINGFIELD, VT -At a time when Craigslist ads have usurped printed classified ads and online yard sales are as common as traditional ones St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Fairground Road in Springfield has made its property available for vendors to sell their goods every Saturday. This event combines elements of yard sales, flea markets, craft fairs, and farmers’ markets, and is referred to as “Dump Daze” in reference to the fact that the road booms with traffic as community members frequent the Chester-Springfield Recycling Center and Transfer Station just up the road.
“The church looked at our assets and decided this was a wonderful way to give back to the community,” explained St. Mark’s representative Deb Luse. “It’s just really here to be a benefit for the community.”
Anyone can sell at Dump Daze: there is no prior registration and no fee to participate. The event begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 12 p.m.; however, if business is booming and dealers would like to stay longer into the afternoon Luse welcomes them to do so.
The June 28th market featured several newcomers. Springfield resident Lori Coulombe brought a large selection of new goods, including health and beauty products.
“I’ve seen it in the newspaper, so I said I’d try it,” she said of Dump Daze. “It’s a good location. A lot of people are on this road to do their recycling and stuff like that,” she said.
Coulombe coupons in her free time and sells the new products that result from her couponing at half the price they would sell for in a store. After working at her regular job she dedicates “a couple hours every day” to finding coupons, cutting them, and organizing them.
“I was searching on the internet and I saw that other people do it, and I thought I’d give it a try,” she said of discovering couponing. “I like it. I do it in my spare time.” Her new, discounted goods provide market-goers with a definite bargain.
Like Coulombe, Rose Knight also participated in her first Dump Daze. She had heard of the event and decided that it would be a good venue to sell her goods, which include plants. “It was such a beautiful day!” Knight said as she noted that her perennial plants were selling well.
There was wide range of items for sale, as next to Knight’s plants was Carol Wing’s table of craft supplies and cross-stitch work, which she can customize with names and birthdates. “This is my second time this year,” said Wing. “I did it the first week and I did pretty well.” She cited the location a reason for drawing her to the market. “There’s a lot of traffic going past here,” she said. She also noted that the event is “well advertised.” “It’s a nice community service the church offers because they don’t charge anything,” Wing said of St. Mark’s.
Kay McCormick returned this year after last year’s success. Her display included framed artwork. “I’ve got to reduce what’s in my house,” she said, and Dump Daze allows her to do so without the hassle of preparing her residence for a yard sale.
Gail Derosier of Weathersfield, like McCormick, was drawn to the market “to try to get rid of some of the stuff around the house.” This free space to sell is especially advantageous to Derosier. “I can’t do it at my house,” she said.
With location, ease of participation, and good advertising the vendors made it apparent that there are many reasons to participate in Dump Daze.
“We’d like it to be an annual event,” said Luse. This year’s market is already in its fourth week, but Luse expects it to last through the fall contingent upon weather. Her vision for the event includes the number of vendors growing and for a variety of vendors to turn out. “I’m specifically looking for someone to do food,” she said.
Yet while Luse has goals for Dump Daze, she is happy with its success so far. “I don’t sell anything, but I always end up buying things,” she said.
Anyone interested in learning more about the market can contact Luse at 802-885-2484.
