SPRINGFIELD, VT -When most people think of Halloween they think of trick-or-treating, candy and people dressing up in costume. Recently, however, Halloween has become a holiday for dressing up one’s pet. Springfield Animal Hospital celebrated this trend by hosting a Halloween celebration throughout the day on October 31.
The Halloween festivities began at 8 a.m. and lasted until 5 p.m. Throughout the day, clients came in with their pets dressed up in a variety of different costumes. Those that could not come in posted pictures to Springfield Animal Hospital’s Facebook page. First, second and third place prizes for the best costumes will be handed out at a later time.
Staff members decorated the clinic and provided Halloween treats for both humans and animals.
“I came up with the idea for a Halloween celebration,” Veterinarian Dena Meehan said. “In years past at other places of employment, the staff and I had Halloween festivities for clients and pets. I thought it was a fun way to acknowledge our clients and it’s also fun for the staff.”
Meehan said that her purpose in having the festivities was to have fun. According to Meehan, the prizes that will be given out are gift certificates to Springfield Animal Hospital
“First place will receive a $50 gift certificate, second place will receive a $25 gift certificate and third place will receive a $15 gift certificate, all to Springfield Animal Hospital,” she said. “The staff are the judges. There are also gift baskets with toys, treats, and a coupon for a free bag dog/cat food for best costume – pet and owner and funniest costume – pet.”
During the day of the festivities, the pets that came in to the hospital each received a free toy. Though this was the first year for the Halloween festivities at Springfield Animal Hospital, Meehan hopes to continue this celebration in the future.
“We will make this a tradition from now on,” she said.
