Court documents: Woman told housemates to lie about murder suspect Story Comments Image (2) ShareShare Print Create a hardcopy of this page Font Size: Default font size Larger font size Posted: Thursday, April 23, 2015 12:00 pm By Martha Shanahan Sentinel Staff Martha Shanahan Posted on Apr 23, 2015by Martha Shanahan The Keene woman arrested and accused of interfering with the search for a murder suspect told housemates to lie about his whereabouts, according to court documents. Residents of a Page Street house told police that Kristin M. Walsh, 29, asked them to lie and say they had not seen Gregory A. Smith, who is wanted on a second-degree murder charge in the Saturday shooting death of his neighbor in Springfield, Vt., according to an affidavit prepared by Keene Police Detective Joel Chidester. Another person living in the house at 33 Page St. told police he had met Smith three weeks ago and that Smith was a “frequent” visitor to the residence, but that Walsh had told the housemates to tell police they hadn’t seen him in weeks, Chidester wrote. Vermont State Police said Wednesday they know Smith was at 33 Page St. on Sunday. Police from Vermont and Keene agencies arrived to search the Page Street home Monday morning, but Smith was gone by then, Vermont State Police Lt. Kraig LaPorte said Wednesday. Walsh was arrested Tuesday on a felony count of hindering apprehension and a felony count of tampering with witnesses. At a hearing in 8th Circuit Court District Division in Keene Wednesday morning, Judge Edward J. Burke ordered that Walsh be held at the Cheshire County jail in Keene for lack of $20,000 bail. She is not allowed to have contact with the four people who live with her at the white two-family house at 33 Page St., Burke ordered. Police say Smith shot Wesley Wing, 37, Saturday evening near his house. Wing died Sunday morning at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. Walsh told police that she doesn’t remember what happened on Friday, Saturday or Sunday “due to an ongoing health issue,” Chidester wrote. Walsh described Smith to police as an “on-again, off-again boyfriend” and said they had broken up years ago when Smith was arrested for stealing cars, according to the affidavit. In a separate interview with police, Jonathan Vargas, a resident of the Page Street home, said Smith was a “frequent” visitor to the house. Vargas told police Walsh said after a trip to Walmart Sunday that Vargas needed to help Smith because he had done something “real bad,” Chidester wrote. Vargas said Smith told him on Sunday he “had caught a body a day ago,” according to the affidavit. Walsh told Vargas she needed him to help Smith leave Keene, and began to cry, Chidester wrote. Later that night, Smith took a car that Vargas was borrowing from a friend and left the neighborhood, Vargas told police. Then, Walsh gathered Vargas and three other people in the house, and said they needed to have “a story” and that on Monday “they” would kick the door down, presumably referring to police, according to the affidavit. Vargas said Walsh told the group to say they had not seen Smith for a couple of weeks, Chidester wrote. In a separate police interview, Vargas’ fiancĂ©e, Kassaundra Fulgoni, who also lives in the Page Street house, said she overheard Smith tell Walsh on Sunday “I destroyed my life,” and that he had been in a fight during which he “let off five shots.” Wing was found Saturday with four bullet wounds on the right side of his torso, according to police. Police believe Smith left Walsh’s house Sunday night in Vargas’ friend’s car, a 2004 white Buick Rendezvous with a N.H. registration with a pink New York Yankees decal on the rear window and a heart-shaped decal with a zebra pattern on the left rear passenger side window. LaPorte said police also issued a “be on the lookout” alert Tuesday for a green Chevrolet pickup that was stolen from Walpole. Bail in Walsh’s case is set at $20,000. She is on probation for her role in a violent November 2013 assault of a Marlborough firefighter and his friends in Keene’s Railroad Square last year. She is one of six people charged in the assault, which left several people injured. Walsh is scheduled to appear April 29 for a probable cause hearing in 8th Circuit Court District Division in Keene. Keene police said the case is still under investigation and ask anyone with information, including Smith’s whereabouts, to call Chidester at 357-9820.
