A community vigil in memory of Wesley "Wes" Wing of Springfield will be held Sunday at 6 p.m., near the site of the shooting that claimed his life last week. Vigil in memory of Wes Wing set for Sunday April 24,2015 SPRINGFIELD -- A community vigil in memory of Wesley "Wes" Wing of Springfield will be held Sunday at 6 p.m., near the site of the shooting that claimed his life last week. Project ACTION leader Stephanie Thompson said that all community members are invited to remember Wing, 37, a local builder and father of four children, who died after the shooting on South Street. Thompson said that the vigil will be held on the lawn of The Maples, a senior housing project on South Street. "Please join together with other community members to remember Wes and to come together in unity and support for the Wing family in the face of tragedy, to build a stronger community," Thompson said. After a period of sharing, some people will walk around the neighborhood, she said. Wing's alleged assailant, Gregory A. Smith of Springfield, was arrested Thursday in Londonderry with a girlfriend, Wendy Morris. Both are slated to be arraigned Friday in White River Junction criminal court.
I am so sorry for the Wing family over this horrible tragedy. There appears to be a few good thing coming out of this nightmare, first the much needed support for his family and the bonding and show of strength and resolve of our community. I was appalled to read the comment of Selectman George McNaughton. He seems to be focused on his own agenda, has no regards for anyone else's point of view. His way or no way. Always complaining about thing not done to HIS liking. Please Mr. McNaughton think before you speak. You may think your the smartest guy on the block, however you seem to keep tripping over your own ego.
ReplyDeleteWhy did he feel that the vigil should be moved to one of the local churches, town hall or police department. I don't understand. Normally in community protests the vigil is held where the person was gunned down.
ReplyDeleteAs a citizen from a Neighboring town , I want to thank the persons responsible for organizing the vigil. We need to know which streets in Springfield are unsafe for our pupils to walk on when they come to the Howard Dean Center for technical training.
ReplyDeleteIt's important that we mark the area of this violence so that it remains fresh in the minds of community members and their children. There are school bus stops nearby, and the children need to be fearful so they will be cautious coming and going to school. McNaughton is wrong, we need more of these vigils at that place.
ReplyDeletethe worst part is,this could of happened on any street in Springfiel
ReplyDeleteNo, Anonymous 7:56, I really do not think so. This incident was specifically tied to drugs, and it was specifically tied to a citizen confronting drug traffickers on his own. I live on South Street and I shop on South Street and it is a safe street. There are drug dens scattered around town, but that is basically true of most of the United States right now and all of the surrounding communities. This particular drug den was in the process of being cleaned up through the eviction process which does take time in nearly any State. It was clearly a tragedy, and we should work on cleaning up the Town, and there may be more tragedies of this specific type where a private citizen gets frustrated and tries to confront drug addicts -- but that does not mean that Springfield is unsafe. It just means we have to work with the Town Police and the Town Government, even though that may seem frustrating. We will solve this problem, neighborhood by neighborhood. No drama, just straight rational specific actions aimed at the few bad actors.
