Donate bottle and can returns to local habitat for humanity Aug 19, 2015 SPRINGFIELD — Empty bottles and cans from enough Springfield area homes could add up to a substantial donation toward affordable housing for local families. The Springfield Redemption Center has a continuing relationship with the Greater Springfield Vermont Area Habitat for Humanity (GSVAH) to collect returns on bottle deposits for those interested in donating their returns to this worthy organization. Located at 6 Chester Rd. in Springfield, the Redemption Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday to accept your clean and dry returns. Labels need to be intact with a VT stamp on each bottle or can, and containers must not be crushed. When you bring your returns simply tell the staff to put the slip in the habitat folder. Periodically, a habitat volunteer will collect the donation. Shelter is a basic human need. Habitat for Humanity provides safe, decent, affordable homes to families who are unable to obtain conventional home financing. Houses are built at no profit and interest is not charged on the mortgage, which is held by the local habitat group. A typical family might make a 1 percent down payment and contribute 250 to 500 hours of "sweat equity" on the construction of a habitat house, either their own home or someone else's home. The Greater Springfield Habitat includes the towns of Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield and Weston, Vermont. A refurbished house is now available for purchase and building will soon commence on new construction, our ninth Habitat house. If you or a family you know is in need of decent affordable housing, contact George Trombly at (802) 885-5552 or gtvt@comcast.net and ask for an application.
