Police: bank ATM 'destroyed' in attempted midnight heist By ALLAN STEIN | Aug 28, 2015 Share on print Share on facebook Share on tumblr Share on twitter More Sharing Services 0 SPRINGFIELD, VT. — Police said a patrolman working the graveyard shift discovered the drive-up ATM to Citizens Bank in the Springfield Plaza had been "completely destroyed" Wednesday in an alleged attempt to steal cash. "They used an obvious instrument in an attempt to pry it open on several different parts [of the ATM] in an attempt to gain access," Springfield Police Lt. Mark A. Fountain said Thursday. It was not known Thursday afternoon whether the culprit(s) got away with cash, Fountain said. "As far as cash, we have not been able to verify that yet," he said. Police said a patrolman making the rounds Wednesday at 3:30 a.m. found the ATM, located near the bank drive-up window at 2 Chester Rd., had been "completely destroyed." Police suspect the incident occurred around midnight. The front panel to the machine apparently had been pried off in an attempt to gain access to the cash box, police said. Fountain said police are reviewing footage from the bank surveillance camera. No suspects have yet been identified. However, police have "possible leads," he said. "We have been receiving possible leads but nothing that we are going to share publicly at this time," Fountain said. Police are asking anyone with information to call (802) 885-2113.
