Springfield Garden Club Installs Officers at Annual Meeting
Sue McCausland, right, co-president of the Springfield Garden Club honors Marita Johnson, left, with an Honorary Lifetime Membership to the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont, for her many contributions to the club.
The Springfield Garden Club held their annual meeting and luncheon at the Saxtons River Inn where they installed their officers for the coming year.
Stephanie Hockensmith, State Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont President, was on hand to do the official installation. She handed the new officers a variety of colored work gloves as symbols of the responsibilities they will carry out.
Sue McCausland, immediate past co-president handed over the leadership role of the club to Margery Collins, who has been the co-president this year. Sandy MacGillivray has stepped up to fill the position of the other co-president. Therese Burton continues as the club's Treasurer, Carol Eramo continues as the Secretary and Barb Lacey continues as the membership chairperson.
Sue McCausland announced and presented the 3rd Place (Medium Club Category) National Publicity Press Book Award that the club had received for its publicity efforts. Receiving the award for the Club's Photo and record book was Historian Marita Johnson, who also serves as the Publicity Chairperson. The club then surprised Johnson by awarding her an Honorary Lifetime Membership to the State Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont for her contributions to the club. The state membership fee goes towards the state club's student scholarship fund which they thought was very appropriate for Johnson, a retired teacher and chairperson of the local club's student scholarship committee.
The Club begins its busy season of tending the area community planters and gardens. They have already helped with clean-up at Springweather Nature Area, the Dan Foster House Gardens, the Eureka Schoolhouse and the garden at the intersection of Routes 10 and 106. This next week they will plant the gardens at the Springfield Plaza, the Town Hall, the downtown planters in Springfield and the planters at the gazebo on the Common in Chester. They especially want the plantings to look nice this summer to help decorate Springfield for its 250th Anniversary celebrations. The club is a Gold Sponsor of the Town's planned events.
