Detecting history at the Springfield Town Library TONIGHT
Local historians Amanda Page and Jon Soule present a program on the early years of the famous Pinkerton National Detective Agency, focusing on the pre-Civil War years through post-war Victorian times. It’s tonight, May 12, at the Springfield Town Library on Main St, starting at 6:30 p.m. Contact the library for more details at (802) 885-3108 or www.springfieldtownlibrary.org.
Open House at Union St School
On Friday, May 13 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., come check out the newly-renovated Union St School. Coffee and refreshments will be provided as the entire community is invited to visit the school and see all the improvements.
Rummage sale
My friend Estelle Goding invites everyone to the Methodist Church on Valley St in Springfield (the big stone church near the corner of Main St) on Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. til 2 p.m. for a rummage sale.
May Festival
Swing over to the Unitarian Universalist Church on Fairground Rd for a special spring festival. From 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. on May 14, there will be music, a kid’s arts & crafts area, healthy foods for sale, and 30 booths of arts, crafts and flea market items. Spring tour at Fort at No. 4
The Crown Point Road Association hosts an interpretive tour of the Fort at No. 4 in Charlestown NH on Saturday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m. Historical re-enactor Eileen Klymn leads this fascinating tour, which is appropriate for all ages, featuring lots of opportunity to sit and relax and talk history. Fall Mountain nature hike
On Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 – 2 p.m., individuals and families are invited to join a leisurely hike up Fall Mt in Walpole NH. Arranged by The Nature Museum at Grafton and partially funded by TransCanada Corp, the hike led by Jay Fisher, present science teacher and former Museum intern. He’ll discuss the plants, trees and wildlife that call the area home. Bring lunch and drinking water so you can picnic at the top! Park at the North Walpole Elementary School and meet at the soccer field. Wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes, bring a camera or binoculars if you wish – even the family dog is invited (please bring a baggie for Rover’s doo). Hazardous Waste Day
The Springfield transfer station on Fairground Rd offers free disposal of various items listed as household hazardous waste (check out www.vtsolidwastedistrict.org for a detailed listing). Bring qualifying items to the station on Saturday, May 14 between 9 a.m. and noon.
May 14th fun continues into the night
The Springfield Moose Lodge offers a free Senior Community Dinner on Saturday, May 14 from 4 - 7 p.m. Dinner is free for those 65 and over, $7 for the public and $5 for Moose members. Join them for an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Sunday, June 5th from 8 - 10 a.m. for only $6.
Get your groove on
Studio Time and Space at 59 Main St in Springfield offers Argentine tango lessons and TangoFlow workouts kick off May 16 and continue for four Monday nights from 6-8:30 p.m. While Argentine Tango is a “simple, elegant, walking dance, improvised spontaneously between partners,” TangoFlow is “an expressive tango-based dance-fusion fitness workout.” Both classes sound deliciously energetic! Each class is $100 pre-paid or $30 drop-in. Contact Shanti at the Studio to register by calling (802) 875-7272. Also at the Studio, on May 17 at 6 p.m., join the Healing Drum Circle. Community lunch with an English twist
Join my friend Steve Aikenhead of Weathersfield for a community potluck lunch on Tuesday, May 17 at noon at the Perkinsville Community Church, followed by a special program entitled “Walking Through the Cotswolds in the Midlands of England,” based on Steve’s personal experience. Please bring a salad, main dish or dessert; beverages will be provided. The church is at the head of the green in the center of Perkinsville Village, on Route 106 in Weathersfield. Get fishy with salmon fry
Jay McMenemy of VT Fish & Wildlife needs YOU! Help stock salmon fry in the Black River on Thursday, May 19. You need to be able to walk 1-3 miles of stream sections to distribute the tiny fry, carrying a bucket of water and fish. Jay will provide instruction, fish, and hip waders. Stocking starts about 9 a.m. and ends by mid- to late afternoon. Help the Artful Flea
Springfield’s Gallery at the VAULT is gearing up for their upcoming event, The Artful Flea, on June 3 from 5 – 9 p.m. and June 4 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The downstairs area of the Gallery will be transformed into a fundraising flea market to benefit the VAULT’s programs, which include classes, exhibits and workshops for students as well as adults. So do some spring cleaning and bring any unwanted arts & crafts supplies, jewelry, art books, how-to books, re-gifted items, or other saleable unwanted items to the Gallery at 68 Main St between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday. Free nature walk
Join me for a look at aquatic insects, plus walk with Besty Owen to look at local ferns and Alma Beals to explore birds and wildflowers on Sunday, May 22 from 1 – 3 p.m. at the Springweather Nature Reserve, on Reservoir Rd in Springfield. Wear waterproof shoes, bring some drinking water and a camera and/or binoculars to enjoy this beautiful area. This free program is co-sponsored by The Nature Museum at Grafton and Ascutney Mtn Audubon Society, and is partially funded by the Wellborn Ecology Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation.
