Girl, firefighter injured in Springfield blaze
Staff Report
SPRINGFIELD — A 14-year-old girl and a Springfield firefighter had to be treated for minor injuries Sunday evening after a fire at 123 Olive St.
Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Scott Richardson said the girl, one of the nine tenants in the two-family building, had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The firefighter was taken to Springfield Hospital and treated for a back injury, he said. Both were treated and released, he said.
Richardson said fire investigators spent the day at the scene trying to track the cause of the fire, which broke out in the basement of the duplex. The fire was called in around 7:30 p.m., he said. The cause is still undetermined, he said.
Nine people were left homeless in the blaze, Richardson said, and the Red Cross was working to find them places to live.
Richardson said the duplex, which he said was located at the far end of Olive Street in back of the old Bryant Grinder building, was owned by someone from Greenfield, Mass.
He said there was extensive damage to the basement and first floor of both apartments. He said the fire was brought under control in about an hour, and firefighters remained on the scene until 11:30 p.m.
Richardson said Charlestown, N.H., transported both people to Springfield Hospital, and Bellows Falls and Charlestown also assisted fighting the fire, with Chester covering the Springfield station.
Im glad to hear every one is ok.:)
