The Windsor County Agricultural Fair is a perennial favorite of mine, and this year’s event was particularly exceptional! The variety and scope of vendors, entertainers, animals and crafts was simply eye-popping – almost 100% local from Windsor County.
From the stonewall artisan to the wooden fence-and-bench-makers, from cloggers to sheep shearers, from home-made fudge to fried dough, this fair had it all. Many thanks to Jayne Smith, Kari Storm, Carol Hitchcock and every single staff member who volunteered their time and effort to make this year’s Windsor County Fair great.

Bug Hunt in August
Get ready to get wet and wild! The Black River Action Team brings you on an eyewitness, first-hand safari to the bottom of the Black River on Saturday, August 27 from 9 – 11 a.m. Meet at the kayak dock near the playground at Riverside Middle School, bring your sense of adventure and some clothes that can get wet. Stonefly larvae, dragonfly nymphs, burrowing mayflies and much more are the stars of the show; learn what’s important about the Bugs of the Deep, see if you can be faster than a trout by scooping through trays of river water as you seek out the tiny critters to get a closer look. Contact me, BRAT director Kelly Stettner, for more information by calling (802) 885-1533 or sending email to blackrivercleanup@yahoo.com.
Be on the lookout for birdhouses
The folks of Springfield On the Move are auctioning off custom birdhouses on Friday, August 19 at The Hartness House, beginning with a preview from 5 – 7p.m. SOM expects a total of fifty birdhouses, woodcrafted and painted by community members and local artists. Proceeds from the auction benefit SOM’s Façade Improvement Project, which is currently underway. A multi-phase effort to stimulate and invite commerce along Main Street in Springfield, the Façade Improvement Project will help provide a positive first impression for visitors and potential businesses, in addition to helping boost morale in town and community pride.
