Mad Cow Disease strikes Springfield?!? Get to Know Springfield

This was the scene at a recent Children's Concert by the Springfield Community Band, held at The Commons on Summer Hill. But it was an epidemic of fun, so the CDC was not alerted. The lively cow set down its trombone long enough to herd the attending children in time to a rousing Sousa march; later, the kids all stampeded to the warming hut for free ice cream and then took turns conducting the whole band! A grand time was had by all. The Community Band is led this year by Nick Pelton, a former player in the band and graduate of Springfield High School. There will be one more concert by the Springfield Community Band on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 8 – 9 p.m. at the bandstand at Riverside MMiddle School; the bandstand is tucked into the stone wall near the tennis courts, facing the athletic fields.
Get your chicken on
My friend Estelle Goding invites everyone to come to the United Methodist Church on Valley St in Springfield (located under the town clock) on Saturday, Aug 13 for their famous chicken barbecue. Serving begins at noon, with the first mouth-watering chickens ready an hour before, and will continue till sell-out. For just $9 you'll get a complete meal, including BBQ chicken, a generous helping of coleslaw, special recipe baked beans, and a brownie for dessert; there will also be homemade pies on sale by the slice or whole! Feeding a crowd? Large orders, eat-in or take-out, may be placed by calling the church on Wed or Fri at (802) 885-3456. In conjunction with Springfield's 250th birthday, there will also be an open house from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m., with guided tours throughout the beautiful church.
VAULT over to the Weathersfield Inn
The Gallery at the VAULT announces their second annual Palate to Palette event, an afternoon of local food and local art, held at the Weathersfield Inn on Sunday, Aug. 14 from 2 - 5 p.m. Enjoy an assortment of foods prepared from fresh local ingredients by Chef Jason Tostrup, a cash bar, and live music by George Ainley, Barbara Burns, Julie Levy and Steve Matush. The accompanying auction and raffles benefit various VAULT programs, from children's art camps to adult workshops. The goal for the Palate to Palette event is $10,000, raised through the $50 registration fee and the auction and raffle proceeds. Call the VAULT to RSVP at (802) 885-7111 or log onto their website at www.galleryvault.org.

Garage Sales to benefit Humane Society
Head on over to the North Springfield Self-Storage units on Friday mornings from 8 a.m. till noon to check out all the goodies for sale! Proceeds benefit the Springfield Humane Society's residents, including two very sweet older German shepherds, Linus (6) and Lucy (10). Their adoption fee is waived if they find a home as a pair, as they are elite members of the Grey Whiskers Club. Bringing a companion home can add years to your life and joy to your heart. Call the shelter at (802) 885-3997 or stop by to meet some of the wonderful animals in need of a "forever home" at 401 Skitchewaug Trail. The next low-cost spay-neuter clinic for cats will be on Aug. 23 in Chester; it's half-full already, so call (802) 885-2174 to reserve your space! You can help end the suffering caused by overpopulation. The shelter is open Wed to Sat from noon till 4:30 p.m.
