SPRINGFIELD — A fire Monday afternoon at a home at 221 Breezy Hill Road damaged a home and sent a firefighter to the hospital.
Springfield Fire Chief Russell Thompson said the unnamed firefighter was sent to the hospital suffering from exhaustion, and he said the trip to Springfield Hospital was a precautionary step.
The fire started in the basement of the two-story brown cape. Thompson said the fire was contained to the basement, but caused heavy smoke damage in the upstairs of the house. The fire is under investigation, the chief said.
The fire chief said he didn’t know who the house belonged to.
He said no one was hurt fighting the fire, which drew firefighters from Chester, Bellows Falls, Rockingham, and Charlestown, N.H., as well as Springfield. Ascutney firefighters staffed the Springfield station while the local crew was fighting the fire.
Breezy Hill Road is in a rural area of Springfield, and fire departments had to truck water to the scene to fight the fire.
The Vermont Red Cross was at the scene. Firefighters said the house was not inhabitable after the fire.
