Shumlin: State’s future hinges on early education

Providing universal early childhood education for all Vermonters will provide for a bright economic future for the state, Gov. Peter Shumlin said Tuesday at an early childhood summit in Montpelier.

  1. The future of this nation hinges on the parents teaching their children. Headstart is an abject failure.

  2. For all the "talk" about education. For all the money thrown at education. For all the fabulous predictions about education being the key to a bright future. And here America sits, with chronically declining test scores that place it mediocre at best among the nations of the world. And idiots like Shumey just keep serving up the Kool Aid and flapping their jaws, with no answers as to where these highly educated young people are going to work in an America that offers a dearth of well paying jobs and fewer and fewer meaningful opportunities for them.

  3. Dear Peter, The rest of the world will appreciate the smart children your programs generate, since they won't be able to find a job in Vermont because your vision doesn't include private sector jobs. Maybe when we're all employed by the state you'll be even happier.

Regards, Self Employed (so far) Tax Payer.

  4. taxpayers are gonna get stuck with the bill and get nothing in return, because all the kids will go out of state,to make the big bucks, when my kids went to preschool,i footed the full bill for it,how about we make the schools do the jobs that the taxpayers are paying them millions to do,that might help them learn better.

  5. Anonymous 8:46 you should do your research before calling something an "abject failure". Statistics show that children who attended Head Start have a better graduation rate from high school then those that didn't attend..... Sometimes a classroom is the only safe place a child can have. Some town educational systems should model after a program like Head Start instead of blowing money.
