Prisons OK, but need some work

Vermont’s eight prisons are in good shape, according to an analysis recently conducted on the Department of Corrections’ facilities.

The Vermont Department of Corrections is going to talk facts and figures during its next town hall meeting.

The meeting Wednesday on Vermont Interactive Television will discuss data from 2013.

The meeting is part of a series of town halls designed to encourage community participation and support.

The meeting will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 12 via Vermont Interactive Television, which has sites around the state. The locations are in Bennington, Brattleboro, Lyndonville, Montpelier, Middlebury, Newport, Rutland, Springfield, St. Albans and Williston.

  1. Rep. Alice Emmons, a Springfield Democrat and chairwoman of the House Corrections and Institutions Committee, said the analysis will help the committee plan for the future...

Right. It'll help the state plan to keep the Springfield Prison around even LONGER, thereby compromising the town's future even worse!

The future is bleak for Springfield.

  2. The Springfield Prison - correct name is Southern State Correctional Facility - isn't going anywhere. It isn't compromising the town's future and it being here has no bearing on the crime in this town. Stop blaming the prison for individual behavior of those in town or those passing through town who choose criminal activity

    1. That you would "clarify" the correct name of the prison is indication enough that you are defending it. The prison is a ball and chain around Springfield's ankle (if not its neck) and will darken the town's outlook for as long as it continues to operate. By the way, I don't blame the prison for the behavior of individuals (unless, perhaps, those individuals in question are "former residents" of such an admired institution).
