Police said Evan White, 23, of Rockingham, was headed north about 7 a.m. when he lost control of his 2013 Toyota Scion and went into the median. Police said White got out of his car and was waiting beside it when Janessa Gray, 25, of Chester, slowed as she approached the scene in her 2012 Honda Civic. Behind Gray was Riccardo Yarbrough, 61, of West Memphis, Ark., who police said hit the rear end of Gray’s car when he was unable to slow his 2006 International tractor-trailer, which was pulling a flat trailer with cargo. Police said Gray and Yarbrough were both passing a 2014 Kenworth tractor-trailer, driven by 43-year-old Melvin Lucia of Burlington and pulling two box trailers, and Yarbrough sideswiped one of Lucia’s trailers after hitting Gray’s car. Police said Yarbrough’s truck then slid into the median, coming to rest facing south as his trailer sat sideways across the interstate, blocking both travel lanes. As he slid into the median, according to police, Yarbrough’s truck hit White and White’s car. Gray went off the east side of the road, police said, while Lucia stopped in the breakdown lane. Yarbrough, White and Gray were all taken to Springfield Hospital for injuries. White suffered a head injury, police said, while his car was a total loss. Yarbrough’s truck also was a total loss, according to police, while he suffered minor head and back injuries. Gray suffered minor neck and back injuries, police said, while her car took moderate rear-end damage. Police said Lucia was unhurt, but both of his trailers sustained minor damage. The road was wet and covered with patchy ice, police said, the result of freezing rain. The northbound part of Interstate 91 was closed between exits 6 and 7 for five and a half hours as the truck was removed. Police said the investigation is pending. 2014TopNewStories
