Freedom Park is a very large public park in the middle of a neighborhood on the east side of Springfield, Vermont. The Freedom Park neighborhood boundaries are Clinton Street, South Street and then down Merrill Street. A wooded area borders the east side of the neighborhood. The South School sat on this property but closed in the late 60s, early 70s. The brick school is long gone but Freedom Park stands in its place. The Freedom Park Neighborhood Group is working toward returning Freedom Park to the park many Springfielders remember when ice skating and sledding and hot chocolate in the “Hut” were staples in the winter. The “Hut” is a log cabin that houses two restrooms and a large meeting room with a wood- burning stove and was built in 1976. In 2005 a new play structure was raised and a volleyball court was created. The first project of the Freedom Park Neighborhood Group will be to return the volleyball court to shipshape condition readying it for summer volleyball leagues.
