SPRINGFIELD — A five-vehicle crash at one of downtown Springfield’s main intersections snarled traffic for more than two hours Thursday afternoon as ambulance crews and police worked to sort out the situation.
The 3:45 p.m. accident occurred near the entrance to McDonald’s on River Street, just north of the four-way intersection serving the Springfield Shopping Plaza.
One of the people to arrive on the scene was an off-duty firefighter who alerted dispatchers that at least one person had been injured, Springfield Police reported.
A delivery van belonging to United Parcel Service was among those involved and, because it was a commercial vehicle, that led to the request for a Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles investigator to respond to the scene to assist with the investigation.
One car was heavily damaged and one patient was transported to the Springfield Hospital Emergency Room for evaluation, but injuries were not believed to be serious. All vehicles were towed away and traffic was back to normal by 5:30 p.m.
The accident remains under investigation.
