video transcript
springfield, vermont native mike ruse is an investigations detective for the vermont state police. he does not moonlight as a taxi driver. he does, however, have a life long fond understands for new york city cabs. so he finally bought one. i think the interest came to me many years ago when i was probably 10 years old and my father took me to new york city on a business trip, i had never been, i had lived in vermont my whole life. my first introduction from the airport was a whole sea of yellow taxi cabs. when i grew older and i had an interest in cars, my interest was really sparked with cars that a lot of people don't really want, and i've always thought to myself there's no better car than a new york city cab because really nobody wants one. bruce found one he wanted on craigslist, a 2006 ford crown victoria which did five years of service in new york city, logging over 300,000 miles. i just thought, it's like literally kicked to the curb. bruce paid $1,000, kept the off duty roof light on and never considered a paint job. ic kind of like it this way, it's what it is, it's a new york cab and that's why i left that it way. which means mike ruse's car stand out in a rural place like vermont. he's heard all the comments. you get a lot of double triple takes, what is that, they'll make a comment, long way from home, et cetera. bruce keeps the car running well, takes it on vacations and has put almost 100,000 new miles on it. he also likes knowing he's preserved an icon that is no longer made. i just really enjoy driving the car. and they'll all be gone, they'll literally all be junked and driven into the ground. but not this one, not yet. number 8d69 will some day drive into the sunset, but it's sure getting to see a lot. pretty scenery along the way. you feel like on some level you're giving this cab a retirement it never could have dreamed of? i think so, i think it likes me, i hope so. when he first brought the cab up to vermont a local cab company called the chief of police and said hey there's a new york cabbie up here taking our fares. not the case, he's definitely off duty. but once in a while he finds somebody sitting in the back seat. that is "chronicle" for tonight. thank you for joining us. i'm anthony everett. i'm j.c. monahan. have a great night. we're back here tomorrow at 7:30. next "chronicle." let's be honest, it's been a long winter. "chronicle" discovers indoor adventures. here goes. shake off the cold. take the rest of winter off.
