WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A Springfield man who repeatedly spat at police and was described as “basically out of control” in a series of incidents last summer reached a plea deal that will put him in jail for at least six months.
John Johnston Jr., 33, pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor charges and prosecutors dropped two felony attempted burglary counts and a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge.
Johnston was sentenced to serve one to three years and given a recommendation that he be allowed to enroll in the Corrections Department’s work camp program at the Windsor prison.
If he is accepted by the program that would give him two-for-one credit for every day spent working there.
Residents of a Springfield apartment building called police in June saying Johnston had gotten into a confrontation with them and was trying to climb through a window to continue it.
Sgt. Jon Molgano said that after Johnston was taken into custody he repeatedly spat at officers and they had to hose down a holding cell and scrub out a police cruiser.
Johnston pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of assaulting police with bodily fluids, providing false information to police, vandalism, and two counts of violating release conditions.
