SOUTH LONDONDERRY, Vt. -
Vermont State Police say they've captured the man behind a deadly shooting in Springfield. Gregory Allen Smith eluded investigators for five days after police say he killed Wesley Wing, 37, as Wing walked to a grocery store. Police say Smith and his girlfriend Wendy Morris were on the run and hiding out at a campground in South Londonderry when they caught up with the pair Thursday morning.
The Winhall Brook Camping area is quiet, far away from any main roads. But Vermont State Police and local police say that's where they tracked down Smith and Morris. Police say they were hiding out in an old trailer on a piece of land that belonged to one of Smith's friends. Once police found them, Smith and Morris were taken into custody without incident.
"Any number of places in the last 24-48 hours we've gone to check to look for him. This is one that we had to check, check off the box. But obviously these types of situations we're being careful, very cautious. We've got members of our task force ready as part of the investigation so that if we have particular locations we can send some of our most skilled people to try apprehend him as safely as possible," Vt. State. Police Capt. J.P. Sinclair said.
Smith was wanted for the murder of Wesley Wing, who was shot in Springfield Saturday evening. Wing suffered four gunshot wounds and died at the hospital the next morning.
Police say they started searching for Smith shortly after the shooting. They said Smith and Wing were neighbors and they're sure Smith pulled the trigger.
"In this particular case we feel strongly that Mr. Smith is responsible for this murder," Sinclair said.
Through a series of tips, police say there were able to track Smith in a stolen vehicle to New Hampshire and then back into Vermont. They say Smith was able to avoid police for five days with the help of friends.
"We'll look into this investigation further to see number one who they are and if we can identify them, and if we move forward we're going to charge them," Springfield Police Chief Douglas Johnston said.
Police have already charged another of Smith's girlfriends, Kristin Walsh, for helping him avoid capture.
State police and Springfield police say they are grateful for the help New Hampshire and other police agencies gave them to help locate the suspect.
A motive for the murder is not totally clear. But police believe that Smith may have shot the victim simply because he called Smith's girlfriend a drug dealer and told her to get out of his neighborhood.
Smith was still being questioned at the Springfield Police Department Thursday evening. He will be arraigned Friday. Morris may face charges for helping him elude police.
The investigation into Smith's whereabouts was aided by the recently created special crimes unit with the Vermont State Police. That team has a core of investigators who work on high-profile cases.
