Man denies helping accused killer By ERIC FRANCIS CORRESPONDENT | May 28,2015 PHOTO BY ERIC FRANCIS Darrell Barror, 33, is accused of hiding murder suspect Gregory Smith at a camp Barror owns in Londonderry. WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A second person has been charged with helping to hide the man accused of shooting a Springfield resident to death last month. Darrell Barror, 33, of Springfield pleaded innocent Tuesday in White River Junction criminal court to a felony count of acting as an accessory after the fact. If convicted, he could be sentenced to serve up to seven years in prison. Barror was released on conditions after his arraignment. Gregory Smith, 30, was charged late last month with second-degree murder in the April 18 shooting of Wesley Wing, 37, on the sidewalk near Jake’s Market in Springfield. Smith was captured days later in a camper in the woods in Londonderry, along with Wendy Morris, 25, who has pleaded innocent to a charge of aiding a fugitive. In his affidavit, Detective Sgt. Patrick Call of the Vermont State Police described Morris, who is Barror’s sister, as being Smith’s “on and off girlfriend.” He wrote that Morris devised the plan to hide Smith in a camper on her brother’s land in South Londonderry. Call said when detectives initially interviewed Barror, he denied knowing anything about Smith’s travels, but later “admitted that he ... had brought Smith to his Londonderry property” after picking up Smith at Magic Mountain. Barror allegedly told police that three days after the fatal shooting, he gave his sister a ride to the camp so she could be with Smith. Call said Barror made three trips to bring them food, cigarettes and gasoline for a generator. When the detective asked what Smith had said about the shooting, Barror replied that “Smith told him that he was getting beat up by (Wing) and was being punched in the head.” Smith also told Barror “he just fired and once he fired, he blacked out,” Call wrote. Wing was shot four times. Barror told Smith that Wing was a longtime friend and Smith replied “I’m sorry,” the affidavit said. “Barror claimed he told Smith he could have handled it differently, and Smith responded by stating ‘I had my gun on me,’” Call said. Smith’s alleged statements to Barror do not match the investigators’ account of the shooting. Police and prosecutors said Wing called Smith’s girlfriend, Morris, a “heroin addict” and yelled that she should get out of the neighborhood. Moments later, police said, Smith shot Wing in the abdomen from his car. He returned briefly to his house to grab a backpack, police said, and fled the area.
