SPRINGFIELD — As preparations steam up for the Springfield Steampunk Festival, slated to take place September 11-13 in Springfield, Vermont, the organizing committee is seeking volunteers to take care of a variety of tasks from pre-festival organizing to event set up, clean up and the myriad during-event festival activities. “With over 24 hours of festival events scheduled over three days, the festival’s success relies on many, many volunteers," said Sabrina Smith, festival coordinator. Volunteers will receive a full free weekend pass for a four-hour shift. Some of the tasks include manning the ticket booth, assisting with parking, driving a shuttle bus, runners, activity helpers for the fashion show, children’s activities, performers and workshops vendors among other things. The September Springfield Steampunk Festival embraces what Springfield is all about — a virile, vigorous bustling Yankee industrial mill town, a town seeking a new identity with a rich history of industry and innovation. The festival features three days of Steampunk inspired fun and entertainment. Events and happenings including the Stargazer’s Ball, live musical performances, workshops, lectures, children's activities and games, book readings and signings, tea dueling, Victorian era bike rides, a Trader’s Bazaar, Steampunk fashion show, time machine showing, photo booth, telescope observatory tour and absinthe tasting. The festival benefits the Springfield Community Center. Although originally a literary term used to describe a genre of fiction set in the Victorian or steam-powered era blended with modern or futuristic technology, steampunk is now used to describe much more than written works, from music, to fashion, film, décor, visual arts, and so on. In a nutshell, Steampunk can be described a melding of old and new. Early sign up will help the festival accommodate a volunteer’s schedule and preferred responsibilities. Volunteer applications are being accepted now. To go directly to the Volunteer Application go to www.springfieldvtsteampunkfest.com. In addition, the Springfield Steampunk Festival is still accepting sponsors. The festival committee suggests that sponsors donate to a particular festival event that inspires their company the most. Sponsors are offered recognition in many significant ways. To learn more about the festival visit their website at www.springfieldvtsteampunkfest.com.
