Blaze engulfs home

SPRINGFIELD – A fierce fire heavily damaged a three-story apartment house on Pearl Street late Saturday afternoon.
The 17 Pearl St. home was fully engulfed in flames, and firefighters had surrounded the house and poured water onto the blaze.
Several people who watched the fire said the house belonged to Michael Woychowsky of Springfield, and that it was divided into multiple apartments.
There was no word about injuries at the fire, which broke out around 5 p.m., and because of its downtown location close to the banks of the Black River in Springfield, quickly drew a crowd.
An ambulance responded to the scene at one point.
While police blocked off access to Park Street and Pearl streets, the curious lined up on River Street and parked in the old Fellows Gear Shaper parking lot and watched from a distance as the fire mushroomed out of control before firefighters were able to gain the upper hand.
The fire outlined the frame of the white, three-story house, built on a steep bank above the river.
A police officer said power lines had been pulled down by the river, creating a very hazardous situation.
Fire trucks were stationed in the Elks Club parking lot, as well as at the nearby Park Street School.
The house that was on fire was the first on the right on the narrow street, which leads to the back entrance of the old Fellows Gear Shaper complex.
A firefighter at the Springfield Fire Station said that fire crews were still at the scene at 7 p.m.
