Utah Philips and Rik Palieri in 2008 Utah Philips and Rik Palieri in 2008 REGION – The 52nd Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on January 31, 2010 at the Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Among those nominated for the prestigious award in the category of Best Traditional Folk is Vermont’s own Rik Palieri, of Hinesburg, formerly of Springfield. Rik is one of many musicians on the CD, Singing Through the Hard Times: a Tribute to Utah Philips.
In an exclusive phone interview from Scotland, Palieri reminisced about his times with his friend Utah. Palieri said, “It was an honor to know Utah. He was a peaceful man-a pacifist all of his life.”
Palieri played music with Philips through the late ‘90’s and through 2008.
“Utah was very pleased and excited about what was going on. It meant a lot to him that his songs would continue to live for years to come,” Palieri remembered, “ He was quite clear that his work be presented as he had written and performed it.”
In 2008 talk began about a CD to celebrate the life and music of Utah Philips. The CD started as a homegrown fundraiser and became a double CD with some very well known folksingers such as Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Emmylou Harris, John McCutcheon
and Ani DiFranco. Utah Philips would never hear the CD as he died in May of 2008.
“I’m so honored to have a song featured on ‘Singing Through the Hard Times, A Tribute To Utah Phillips’. I knew when I was asked to be involved in this CD that I was working on something of value. This whole CD is a wonderful tribute to a man who kept the flame of hope burning, now perhaps with this CD we can carry on and keep his light bright for the future.”
Palieri also put a video together of Singing Through the Hard Times that is now up on the web! It includes some footage of Utah talking about what it means to be a pacifist.
The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States presents annually The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards)—or Grammys for outstanding achievements in the music industry. The awards ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and some of the awards of more popular interest are presented in a widely viewed televised ceremony.
