Springfield to mark 54th annual Cotillion
By JOSH O'GORMAN STAFF REPORT
SPRINGFIELD — Anyone feeling chilled during the recent spate of snow will have his or her heart warmed by "Summer Daze" at the 54th annual Apple Blossom Cotillion.
For two nights — Friday and Saturday at Riverside Middle School — high school and elementary school pupils will strut their stuff during a series of musical performances featuring songs about the subject of summer. The event, which is the largest in Springfield and draws more than 1,500 people, is a fundraiser for the Springfield Hospital Foundation.
"This year's show will be a little different, because the escorts (the boys) will be performing two musical numbers," said Larry Kraft, Springfield Hospital Foundation director.
This year will also feature the largest number of elementary-age participants ever.
"We have 29 little kid couples this year and we had 23 last year," Kraft said, noting that the increasing number of young children participating will hopefully boost high school-age participation in the future.
For decades, the cotillion raised money to purchase equipment for the hospital, but for the past five years the money has been used to provide about $15,000 a year in scholarships for students seeking a career in medicine.
Kraft also noted that the cotillion has raised more money from local sponsors than ever before.
"It really shows the community's commitment to the event," he said.
Tickets for Saturday's show are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, and are available at Tina's Hallmark Shop in the Springfield Plaza and in the hospital gift shop. Tickets for Friday's show are $10 and are available at the door.
