On Saturday, May 22, the North School Preservation Society held a benefit book sale for the society's cause of preserving the North School building and playground. The sale was well attended, and we raised over $400.
I would like to thank the members of our society who worked long, arduous hours to collect, move, sort and sell books, and I would also like to thank the many patrons who came to browse, buy books, donate and encourage us in our work. One of the major donors of books not only helped us collect books for several days before the sale, but also helped us sort them and then stayed to give us a very welcome strong pair of hands returning the leftovers to be stored until they can be redistributed.
We were also especially thankful for some of the buyers who pitched in and helped us set up the sale and then stayed to browse and buy books. Several patrons not only bought books but gave unexpected, generous donations beyond the price of the books they bought. To all of these and the many others who came by to browse, buy and visit, I sincerely thank you. Many thanks as well to the countless donors of books. We could not have had such success without you.
This sale was bittersweet for us, it having been a sale that included many treasured books, especially an extensive cookbook collection, that had belonged to our late member, Suki Woods, who is well remembered for her many talents and dedication to our group and its cause. I'd like to think she would have applauded our work, and I know her collections are going to appreciative homes.
The next event scheduled for the North School Preservation Society will be an open house tour of the North School building during Alumni Day weekend on Saturday, June 26, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Look for news of this in area newspapers and on the Internet as the date approaches.
