WWII and Korean War vets to be honored

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Posts Robert L. Johnson No. 771 (Springfield) and White River Junction No. 2571 are sponsoring a World War II and Korean War Veterans Reunion Day at the Springfield VFW on Sunday, Sept. 5, starting at noon.

This is the 60th Anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War and the 65th Anniversary of the end of World War II.

Veterans from World War II and the Korean War, returned to their communities holding their pain and sometimes sad memories of their experiences to themselves; they were the "Silent Generation." This day is designed to honor veterans from this generation for their sacrifice and dedication.

There will be historic memorabilia, entertainment, meals, and speakers. Two masseuses will be available. All veterans who served anytime between 1940-1953 from around Vermont and New Hampshire are invited for a day of thanks and remembrance. There will be handheld recorders for "story-takers" to sit with veterans, record their stories, and take pictures, for those who are willing. After the event, the stories will be collated into a journal or slide presentation for the classroom. It is hoped to use the event to educate regional children and help them recognize the contributions of this generation.
