Governor Jim Douglas has proclaimed the week of September 19, 2010 Vermont Adult Day Services Week. Throughout Vermont 14 adult day providers offer a safe and comfortable place for adults with dementia other health issues, and seniors who are socially isolated, to spend the day.

Throughout Vermont 14 adult day providers offer a safe and comfortable place for adults with dementia other health issues, and seniors who are socially isolated, to spend the day.   •  Locally, many family members with seniors or disabled adults over the age of 18 who face the challenge of losing their independence, enlist the assistance of the Springfield Area Adult Day program which offers them an alternative to residential care.  •  Adult Day provides physically- or cognitively-impaired adults with a structured program of social activities and needed health care, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is a planned program that includes a variety of health, social, and support services in a safe, protective environment. The facility is secure for people with Alzheimer's and includes secured doors and a fenced-in outdoor space.  •   A department of Springfield Hospital, Adult Day Service is community-based and designed to meet each individual patient's needs. Staff is trained to meet special needs of all participants, including those with Alzheimer's, ambulatory restrictions, confusion, dementia, frailty, incontinence, Parkinson's, strokes, and heart attack.  •   A structured plan of care is designed for each participant. Activities include a wide array of interesting, fun and therapeutic recreational activities that create opportunities for social interaction and nurturing of the mind, body, and spirit. Outdoor recreation provides a change of scenery with a safe and comfortable backyard property to enjoy activities on warm day. Appropriate areas are also available for those who need bed rest or quiet time.  •  Nutritious meals and snacks are provided with a light breakfast that starts each day and a hot lunch served at noon. In the afternoon, snacks are served before participants return home. People with dietary restrictions or who have difficulty eating receive individual attention to meet their needs.  •  Personal hygiene services, including bathing, hairdressing, nail care, and shaving are also available. Physical Rehabilitation, podiatry services, and physician visits can also be arranged. Nursing oversight provides ongoing monitoring of weight, blood pressure, and food/liquid intake.   •  Door-to-door pick-up and drop-off is provided within the Springfield service area at no extra charge. Springfield Area Adult Day Service partners with Connecticut River Transit to provide fully-equipped, handicapped-accessible vans that are operated by trained, courteous drivers who take the time to get to know each participant and make them comfortable.  •  The cost of Springfield Area Adult Day Service includes meals, snacks, transportation within the area, activities, personal hygiene and medical supervision. Fees are more economical and approximately one-fifth the cost of nursing home care, and financial assistance is available based on a sliding fee.
